How to torch bamboo
A Moment of Tiki: the debut episode
This is the one that started it all. Whilst other people were coddling their sourdough starters in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I launched a YouTube series about building a home tiki bar. Today, I cringe at the pacing and production values. I didn’t have a videography background and didn’t know what I was doing. But I’ve never let that stop me before. More than four years ago I didn’t know what I didn’t know. Even my handling of the bamboo is cringe-inducing in light of knowledge accumulated over the previous four years. But that’s what learning is about, isn’t it? I like to say “I make the mistakes so you don’t have to,” and this web series is proof of that. A Moment of Tiki Episode 1 may be viewed at this link. Here are the original show notes:
A Moment of Tiki is a web series originating from my home tiki bar, the Lagoon of Mystery, in Central Texas. In this first episode, I discuss bamboo, the primary building material in all great tiki bar builds. Where can bamboo be purchased? Where can it be found? Once bamboo is acquired, how go about converting it from the bright green timber grass in nature to the warm tan structures adorning tropical hideaways? Are you a DYIer who is ready to jump into home improvement projects that have a distinct tropical bent to them? Do your projects reflect a fascination with exotic lands and cultures? Does a day of working hard around the house ideally end with a complex, flavorful mixed drink that includes one or more rums? Or do you hope to get to that point someday, but don't know where to start or how to get there? Well, I hope to answer those questions and more right here on this channel.
