About a month ago I got an email from Susan Elisabeth Shepard, who wanted to talk about the Chicken Ranch. Believe it or not, emails from total strangers wishing to discuss the finer points of a defunct house of ill repute are a common occurrence for me. The fact that Shepard is a writer for Texas Monthly, however, is not. In fact, for the past 30 or so years Texas Monthly has gone out of its way to avoid having me sully its pages (which is, perhaps, a story for another time) but desperate times call for desperate measures: The Aggies and Longhorns are renewing their historic college football rivalry this month after a decade of estrangement and Texas Monthly was quite keen to get the skinny on the infamous legend of what the winning team of the so-called “Pussy Bowl” received afterward.
So now you know what Broadway, politics and mid century prostitution have to do with next Saturday’s football game, if anyone asks you. It’s absolutely ridiculous, but then again, all of the good stories are. Read all about it here: When the Aggies Danced on Broadway.
