Refinishing My Floating Deck

Preventive maintenance is a necessity with outdoor tiki bars

Four years ago I built a floating deck out of Western red cedar to anchor the far end of my tiki space and serve as a platform for my booth. While the deck has held up well and has gotten a lot of use, the fact of the matter is that outdoor tiki bars require regular maintenance and upkeep. Over the years UV rays, heat, foot traffic and occasional rain gusts have taken their toll and weathered the original sealant I applied. Western red cedar is a wood that stands up to the elements very well, but even it will decay if not taken care of. So here I bite the bullet and get down to the tedious (but not terribly difficult) task of reapplying weather sealant to the deck to ensure another four years of good service.

For those who are curious, I'm applying Cabot's Australian Timber Oil. It's an oil/spar urethane blend that performs fairly well for the price. I'm not compensated in any way for my use of this product, but if Cabot's is out there watching, sponsorships are available.
